Burma Prison Sentences – Ban Ki-moon And Security Council Must Act
Sentencias a los Prisioneros Birmanos- Ban Ki- moon y el Consejo de Seguridad deben de actuar
The Burma Campaign UK and Spain today called on the United Nations to take action following the jailing of 14 democracy activists in Burma. The 14 have been jailed for 65 years. If they are forced to serve their full terms, they will die in jail.
La Campaña Birmana de UK y España hace un llamamiento hoy a las Naciones Unidas a tomar iniciativas para los 14 activistas pro-democraticos encarcelados en Birmania. 14 miembros que han sido condenados a 65 años. Condenados al maximo de la pena, moriran en la prisión
“The United Nations Security Council said last October that the regime must release political prisoners,” said Nang Seng, Campaigns Officer at Burma Campaign UK. “Instead the regime has arrested a thousand more people, and is now jailing them for life. The regime is defying the Security Council. The Council must respond.”

Only yesterday EU foreign ministers met and called for the release of all political prisoners. The EU promised to increase pressure on the regime if there was no progress to reform, but despite the situation getting worse they have taken no action. The failure of the EU and other governments to follow through on their promises of action emboldens the regime.
Ayer los Primeros Ministros de la Unión Europea han hecho un llamamiento para la liberación de todos los presos politicos. EU ha prometido incrementar la presión al regimen si no hay progreso en las reformas, pero la situación lejos de mejorar estará peor si no se toman acciones. La resolución de EU y otros gobiernos quedara solo en promesas si no hay una acción clara contra el regimen.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is due to visit Burma in December, but there are fears he may back out of the visit because of the difficulties in negotiating with the regime.
El Secretario de Naciones Unidas Ban, Ki-mon debe de visitar Birmania en diciembre, pero hay demasiados miedos que creen poder dificultar las negociaciones con el regimen.
The number of political prisoners has doubled since the democracy uprising in September last year. More than 2,100 prisoners are now in jail.
El numero de prisioneros politicos se ha doblado desde la revuelta azafran del ultimo septiembre. Más de 2100 prisioneros estan ahora en prisión.
